Creating My Masterpiece

Shine On

All biblical references aside as I was watching Glee today I became inspired by “This Little Light of Mine.” I remember singing the song at church camps and talking about how it relates to our spiritual lives. However, it wasn’t until I saw it in this slightly controversial secular television show that I realized how much it can relate to our overall life. “This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine all the time.” It sounds simple, sure, but what does it mean? “Hide it under a bushel? No! I’m gonna let it shine.” To me it means that no matter what tribulations are brought upon us we must never give up. Our light, our spirit, is the only thing that sets us apart from others. Everybody’s light is a different shape, size, and color. We can’t allow ourselves to get lost by all the other pretty lights we see in this world. Your light serves a purpose. There are illnesses that can be cured simply by exposure to light. What if your light was the only light that could cure somebody?

Your house is on fire, and you have three minutes to get out before it collapses around you. You can only grab ONE thing. What?

My dog, Lili. She is my world. <3

Would 5 year old Alexandra approve of 20 year old Alexandra?

You know, this is a question I find myself doing quite a bit of pondering over. There isn’t a simple answer either. I think if 5 year old Alexandra just looked at the facts of where I am in my life she wouldn’t approve. 5 year old Alexandra expected older Alexandra to live a life a glamour. However, if 5 year old Alexandra knew about all the different trials and tribulations she would incur throughout life, I think she would be incredibly proud of where I am in my life. In many ways, I’m still that 5 year old girl. I don’t hold back in love or forgiveness. I’m ridiculously skeptical of what sounds too good to be true. I befriend everybody except that thing currently crawling on my wall. For that, among everything previously mentioned and more, I honestly don’t believe 5 year old Alexandra would be at all disappointed in how she turned out.

Life’s Recipe

Combine 3 cups of sugar for all the sweet times and 1/4 cup of lemon grind for the sour moments. Stir in a pinch of baking powder for the bitter moments that help us grow then add in 4 cups of flour for the love that keeps us holding together strong. Add 5 eggs for the messy moments that keep us coming back for more. Then mix in 1/2 cup of butter for the just because I told you so instances that we just can’t get enough of! Of course, we can’t forget about the chocolate chips. Without the chocolate chips life would be just mediocre. Pour in an 8x6” glass pan so we can see it’s progress more easily. Bake until the top is hard enough to keep a toothpick out. Don’t worry, the inside will be nice and soft. Enjoy!

I wish this was how real life was, don’t you? I wish we could simply mix things together exactly how we want them. Who cares if we messed up? We could simply dump it out and mix it together until we got it right. Sadly, this isn’t how life works. In the real world, we mess up and get burned, leaving us with scars that we can look back on. Without the scars, who’s to say we would remember the burn?
